• the tar.gz image of the local operating system

  • created on the master (~130 MBytes)
  • contains an archive of a full Linux installation
  • is identical for all the nodes
  • but we can have different versions

• created by making a customized Linux install in a chroot environment on the master

• the nodes have a limited number of packages

  • no compiler, no Xwindows, no big applications
  • only base system, libraries, some applications
